Firefox 3

@ spreadfirefox.com

Set a Guinness World Record.

"Sounds like a good deal, right? All you have to do is get Firefox 3 during Download Day to help set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours - it’s that easy. We're not asking you to swallow a sword or to balance 30 spoons on your face, although that would be kind of awesome.

The official date for the launch of Firefox 3 is June 17, 2008. Join our community and this effort by pledging today".

Cheap Train Tickets

@ moneysavingexpert.com

moneysavingexpert has written a new guide.

"Train Ticket Tricks to save £100s. Find hidden cheap fares.
The whole train fare system’s ridiculously illogical; which is why big savings come from hidden rules. Split ticketing is a classic example…a standard London to Penzance return costs £259, yet the train stops in Plymouth so instead buy four separate tickets (London to Plymouth; Plymouth to Penzance and vice-versa) and you can travel on the same train at the same time for £48. My guide to all the tricks has been totally re-researched and rewritten on the back of the recent changes to the fare structure.".

Adblock Plus

Adblock Plus

Following on from this article in The Guardian. I have downloaded and installed Adblock Plus. It blocks adverts appearing on the web pages you view with Firefox.

"Ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page? Install Adblock Plus now and get rid of them. Right-click on a banner and choose “Adblock” from the context menu — the banner won’t be downloaded again. Maybe even replace parts of the banner address with star symbols to block similar banners as well. Or choose a filter subscription, then even this simple task will usually be unnecessary: the filter subscription will block most advertisements fully automatically":.

Counterfeit Windows

The latest Windows Update can result in a window which says:
"This copy of Windows is not genuine. You may be a victim of software counterfeiting."

I would have thought that it's Microsoft that's the victim.

Anyway Taoski says how to get rid of it.

A website that shows you how to tie knots. The ones I use at work are the Bowline, Clove Hitch and Cleat Hitch. There's not many situations where one of these knots won't sort you out!

England unveil World Cup squad

@bbc.co.uk
"England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson will on Monday name a provisional squad to take to this summer's World Cup.

The Swede will make his announcement at 1400 BST in London.

Eriksson can take 23 men to Germany and is expected to name a squad comprising that amount of players - with an extra three or four on a standby list."

Don't know what all the fuss is about, I would take:
Robinson, James, G Neville, Ferdinand, Terry, King, Carragher, Campbell, A Cole, Bridge, Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Cole, Carrick, Downing, Wright-Phillips, Owen, Rooney, Bent, Crouch, Walcott, Lennon.
On stand-by: Green, Jenas, Hargreaves, Defoe

It may be a little light of experienced fit strikers, but I reckon taking Walcott along (and Lennon) will pay dividends for competitions in the future. Plus, from what I've seen, Walcott has the pace to terrorize any defence in the world.

Sven picked:
Robinson (Tottenham), James (Manchester City), Green (Norwich); G Neville (Manchester United), Ferdinand (Manchester United), Terry (Chelsea), Cole (Arsenal), Campbell (Arsenal), Carragher (Liverpool), Bridge (Chelsea), Beckham (Real Madrid), Carrick (Tottenham), Lampard (Chelsea), Gerrard (Liverpool), Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Jenas (Tottenham), Downing (Middlesbrough), J Cole (Chelsea), Lennon (Tottenham), Rooney (Manchester United), Owen (Newcastle), Crouch (Liverpool), Walcott (Arsenal).
I only got 3 wrong, and I got the hard ones (Walcott, Lennon & Downing). :-)

TV on the internet

For what's on TV listings, I use radiotimes.com. You have to register to get the benefit of tailoring which stations you want to display. I find it an easy way to display the channels available on freeview.
Alternatively , for a simple single channel view as a list try thecustard.tv which has descriptions on the programme too.

For TV downloads my first port of call is UK Nova. Again, you have to register, but this site has most of the programmes I watch (Match of the Day, Doctor Who) and a good selection of British television programmes.

For streaming links ie. live television I am usually wanting to watch live football, so I'd go to freepremiershiponline.com, or I'd look at this list of available channels showing football, sport as well as everything else.
For people with a broader spectrum of television entertainment COM FM tv, Nuke Radio TV and WWitv all list available TV feeds.

Screen select lets you rent DVDs, at a monthly charge.
imdb - the internet movie database gives details on all films and TV programs in the UK.

2006 World Cup chart

michaelwray.co.nz

Micheal Wray is simply the best at producing Excel football spreadsheets. On his site there is a 7.1MB World Cup chart (download here).

"Packed with all the usual features you've come to expect, such as:
- Review of all past tournaments and 2006 qualifiers
- Small preview of what's happening with the 2010, 2014, 2018 World Cups
- Review of host cities
- Review of stadiums
- Review of finalists
- Referee information
- World Cup stats for the finalists
- World Cup pedigree display for finalists - World Cup pedigree for all FIFA members past and present (similar to what was in the qualifers, but now includes note for which team prevented further progress). As I figure most people will want to look at the finalists, I've separated into two pages; one for finalists and one for the 175 other FIFA members and 4 non-members.
- Past World Cup results for all finalists
- Head-to-head World Cup results for all finalists
- Timezone converter with automated Daylight Savings conversion. I think I have picked up all DST settings correctly, but there is an override function if not.
- Group phase sorts using full FIFA regulation criteria. (FIFA caught me out briefly by changing the rules from the qualifiers!)
- Brief article comparing UN and Olympic membership to FIFA membership."

You might have to reduce your security settings to enable all the macros. I have done this & my computer is still running :-)
