Best-ever Freeware Utilities
www.techsupportalert.com
This site lists a lot of stuff that I use, so it must be good! :-)
Including:
AVG Anti Virus (www.grisoft.com) allow you to download a free anti-virus program.
Spybot Search and Destory (spybot.safer-networking.de) for getting rid of spyware.
Ad Aware (www.lavasoft.de) cleans your system of programs you don't want on your PC.
Win Patrol (www.winpatrol.com) is a great little program that sits in the background and tells you when programs are trying to change the settings on your PC.
Anyway, there's 46 of them. For some reason the list does not contain
Zone Alarm (www.zonelabs.com), a free firewall that lets you know what programs are trying to connect to the internet.
Nor does the list contain House Call (housecall.antivirus.com) as it is a free online anti-virus scans.

Terror alert in France
AP and UPI are reporting that the French Government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "run" to "hide." The only two higher levels in France are "surrender" and "collaborate."
The elevated alert level was precipitated by the recent fire which destroyed one of their white flag factories, effectively disabling their military.

Joke
A fireman notices a little girl next door playing with a little red wagon with
little ladders hanging off the sides and a garden hose tightly coiled
in the middle. The girl is wearing a fireman's helmet. The wagon is
being pulled by her dog and her cat. The fireman walks over to
take a closer look.
That sure is a nice fire engine" the fireman says with admiration.
"Thanks" the girl says. The fireman looks a little closer and notices
the girl has tied the wagon to her dog's collar and to the cat's
testicles.
The fireman says, "I don't want to tell you how to run your rig, but
if you were to tie that rope around the cat's collar too, I think you
could go faster."
The little girl replies thoughtfully, "You're probably right, but then
I wouldn't have a siren."

Joke
An elderly Irishman lay dying in his bed. While suffering the agonies of his impending death, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favourite cheese scones wafting up the stairs. He gathered his remaining strength, and lifted himself from the bed. Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom and with even greater effort, gripping the railing with both hands, he crawled downstairs. With laboured breath, he leaned against the door frame, gazing into the kitchen. Were it not for death's agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven, for there, spread out upon waxed paper on the kitchen table were dozens of his favourite cheese scones. Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted Irish wife of sixty years, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man? Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself towards the table, landing on his knees in a rumpled posture. His parched lips parted, he could almost taste the cheese scone before it was in his mouth, seemingly bringing him back to life. The aged and withered hand trembled on its way to the nearest scone at the edge of the table, when his hand was suddenly smacked with a spatula ... by his wife.. . . . . . . . . . . "Feck off" she said, "they're for the funeral."

Films
www.metacritic.com
Metacritic compiles reviews from respected critics and publications for film, video/dvd, books, music and games. A summary of reviews if you like.
UK's top100 films
The Ultimate Film counts down, for the first time ever, the most successful 100 films to show in UK cinemas since the dawn of film, based on actual bums on seats.
The last film I saw was.....
American Beauty (link)
An absolutely fantastic film. I can not recommend it enough. In my top 20 films ever. If you haven't seen this film then do so.
Cube (link)
An above average horror film. Hardly "one of the best films ever" which a film graduate said to me. (In case you don't know me 'above average' isn't the highest of compliments from me when it comes to films released since the video revoltion of the 80s).
Pirates of the Caribbean (link)
Another film that is nearly a great film. Johnny Depp hams it up a bit too much, but certainly good enough.
2010 (link)
Not as good as 2001, but not bad for a sequel. At least it offers an explanation of why HAL9000 lost it.
Dawn of the Dead (link)
A parcel.
The Maltese Falcon (link)
"It's twelve inches high and its solid gold". An excellent film, though not as good as The Big Sleep (below) - this is only the second time I've watched it, Humphrey Bogart playing an unsavoury Sam Spade.
Holy Smoke (link)
This is a lass's film. It's the first film I've seen directed by Jane Campion!! I did however, enjoy it. Don't know why mind, probably because Harvey Keitel is in it (more likely the nude Kate Winslet scene :).
Lost in Translation (link)
Not my sort of film at all, but I really enjoyed it. A film about how 2 people meeting can temporarily have an effect on each other's lives. Very slow.
Shaun of the Dead (link)
Absolutely brilliant - hilarious. I loved it.
The Big Sleep (link)
Humphrey Bogart as Philip Marlowe, with Lauren Bacall - a cracking mystery thriller, though possibly a bit too complex - that's just me being picky.
Citizen Kane (link)
I don't want to show my ignorance, but I didn't think this was as good as it's cracked up to be. Orson Welles was fantastic, but I wasn't captivated by the film.
Supersize me (link)
When you analyse some of the facts shown in this film, McDonald's aren't as bad as they could be - he was only asked if he wanted to go supersize 9 times in 90-ish visits. Mind you I recommend you don't go to McDonalds as their food is shit. (I'm pleased to say I haven't been to McDonalds in 10 years).

E bay (ebay.co.uk)
"eBay is the go-to place for all things for millions of people. You can purchase new or used products, rate the person with whom you do business, and even set up your own online shop. It's more than a shopping site, it's an online community, and as such there are many rules in place, including security for perspective buyers and sellers".(PC Mag)
Encyclopedia (wikipedia)
"Wikipedia has grown to 750,000 articles, including entries based on late-breaking stories. Thanks to good oversight, this wiki-based encyclopedia is reasonably free of opinion masquerading as fact—though it's always good to check articles against other sources. A great resource, even if some entries are out of date or incomplete.".(PC Mag)

"This site has everything you ever wanted to know about nearly every movie or DVD ever released. Each listing includes cast and crew members, plot summaries, box office info, even user reviews and trivia. There's even a TV component (iMDbTV) that follows current and upcoming TV shows".(PC Mag)
Football scores (soccerbase.com)
"A comprehensive football statistics site, primarily covering English and Scottish leagues.
Soccerbase contains the results of every English and Scottish league or cup match ever played. You can discover that Forfar 5 East Fife 4 really was a true scoreline, and thousands of other facts. The underlying database is the same that powers Racing Post stats, and is updated every 15 minutes. A real blessing is the speed with which the site can be navigated - there are few ads, and links to relevant players, teams, games and so on make research extremely easy. For the serious gambler there is useful betting data covering fixed-odds, spread betting and pools, but the site can provide entertainment for any statistically-minded fan".(Web User)

"Part tool, part toy. Google came up with this top-notch concept that marries its useful map program with actual satellite imagery. Type in a known address, and if the satellite photo exists, you can zoom in to within a few hundred feet of your search. Though some addresses aren't as accurate as they could be, and large sections of the planet have yet to be married to satellite photos, this free download is a lot of fun".(PC Mag)

Children's pictures
http://www.maddox.xmission.com/irule.html
"If you work in an office with lots of people, chances are that you work with a person who hangs pictures up that their kids have drawn. The pictures are always of some stupid flower or a tree with wheels. These pictures suck; I could draw pictures much better. In fact, I can spell, do math and run faster than your kids. So being that my skills are obviously superior to those of children, I've taken the liberty to judge art work done by other kids on the internet. I'll be assigning a grade A through F for each piece"
A trifle harsh maybe, but he has a point!
Thanks Scott

Fighting talk is a comedy programme on BBC Radio Five Live. It describes itself as
"A razor-sharp breakdown of all that’s happening in the volatile world of sport.
Sony Gold award winner Christian O'Connell, acts as ringmaster - or referee - over a panel of experts from around the world trying to stick their oar in and put their spin on events.
Christian gives points for informed comments but penalises any witless outbursts.".

BT's telephone rip off
Cheap phone lines
http://www.itplc.com
Internet Telecommunications Plc will half the cost of line rental that BT charges.
Cheap phone calls
http://www.call18866.co.uk/
If you register at call18866 your telephone calls cost 1p. (They are actually free, but there is a 1p connection charge).
This is obviously a gross simplification of what is a legally binding contract, but it gives the general picture. The calls cost 1p, no matter how long they are.
There's an article about it on MoneySavingExpert.com here.
Details:
All calls to landlines are 1p for as long as you like. (Except 0845, 0870 etc)
You can set it so you are told how much the call costs before connection.
You have to dial 18866 before the number you want to ring.
Calls to mobiles are 12p/min through the week and 2p/min at week-ends.
Cheap directory enquiries
You can get free directory enquiries on the internet at www.118500.co.uk, www.192.com and www.ukphonebook.com
